Aleta R. Ballard is a seasoned criminal defense attorney based in Smithfield, North Carolina, with nearly two decades of legal experience. She is the founder and owner of Ballard Law Firm, PLLC, where she provides dedicated legal representation to clients facing a range of criminal charges.
Upon being admitted to the North Carolina Bar in 2006, Aleta commenced her career as a Prosecutor at the Office of the District Attorney in Johnston County. During her tenure, she recognized a significant demand for dedicated criminal defense attorneys advocating vigorously for the welfare of their clients. Witnessing individuals in court seeking quality defense representation at an affordable cost, Aleta established her private law practice in 2010. Drawing from her experience as a former prosecutor, Aleta leverages her dual perspective to offer invaluable insights into the prosecution's stance. Attorney Ballard brings extensive trial experience to her role as a defense attorney having graduated from the National Criminal Defense College Trial School in Macon, GA, in 2018. She serves as a Commissioner on the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission, appointed by Chief Justice Chris Dillon for a term from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026. Additionally, she is a guest speaker at the University of North Carolina School of Government, where she shares her expertise in trial skills with aspiring and current attorneys.
Attorney Ballard is also deeply committed to community service. She holds board positions with Johnston County Youth Services, the Johnston County Partnership for Children, and the Elite Xpress Track and Field Club. Her community involvement extends to contributions to the Adult and Children’s Angel Tree through the Department of Social Services, participation in the Shop with a Cop program, and support for the Johnston County Teen Court Program.
